Himalaya, literalmente traduzido como Terra da Neve, é o maior sistema de montanhas da Ásia, onde abriga o mais alto pico do mundo. O sistema forma uma cordilheira com 2.400 km, extendendo-se através do nordeste do Paquistão, norte da Índia, Sul do Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim e Butão. No norte, faz divisa com o alto platô da Ásia Central e ao sul com as planíces férteis do subcontinente indiano. Mais de 30 picos do Himalaya excedem a altitude de 7.500 m.
Nove dos 14 picos de 8.000 existentes no mundo se encontram aqui. O pico mais alto do Himalaya é também o mais alto do mundo, com 8.850 m. Centro econômico, político, industrial, cultural e turístico do Nepal. A cidade é também o ponto de partida das expedições aos cumes da cordilleira.
The Himalaya, literally translated as Land of Snow, is the great mountain system of Asia, home to the highest peaks in the world. The system forms a 1500 mile broad crescent through Northeastern Pakistan, Northern India, Southern Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. It is bordered on the north by the high plateau of Central Asia and on the south by the fertile plains of the Indian subcontinent. Over thirty Himalayan peaks exceed 25,000 feet. Nine of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks are located here. The highest peak in the Himalaya is the highest in the world, Mount Everest at 29,035 ft./ 8,850 m.
